A Dog Named Poe

While we were at the Humane Society for Lindy's birthday, she fell for a dog named Poe, who was born deaf.  When she saw that on his name tag she just had to play with him.  He was a Great Dane/Dalmatian mix so he was huge!  I went with Lindy and the birthday party coordinator, Rex, and we got Poe out to play with him.  He had treats with him and Lindy started doing tricks with him.  When we did our puppy training with Aiden they taught us to always do hand movements as well as say the command.  So she was doing the hand movements and Poe was doing almost every command.  The Humane Society guy was amazed and didn't know he could do any of it.  Poe had been at the shelter for like 4 months.  He had been adopted once and brought back.  I'm sure his size and being deaf made him hard to adopt.  Rex was telling us that he had taken Poe to the local TV station twice to do the weekly segment of animals at the Humane Society.  He kind of jokingly said, "If I take him back, can Lindy come with me?"  Not thinking it would ever happen, I said sure.  Well on Monday my phone rang and it was Rex and he was taking Poe back to the TV station that Wednesday and he really wanted Lindy to go!  He had a script and we had practiced what she was going to say.  Another Humane Society volunteer had taken him home to foster him and she was going to be there on TV with them as well.

They did a short clip teaser of Lindy, Poe and the foster lady and then they got them ready to go.  They started out great but then the TV anchor asked Lindy a question and it opened the door for Lindy to go totally off script.  I mean totally.  ha!  She ended up doing amazing and what she said was even better than what was scripted!  She talked about her connection with Poe and she said, like her, it sometimes just takes a little longer and Poe will just need more time.  She ended with, "Poe is a really sweet dog.....and I'm a pretty sweet kid"  It was so funny and cute!  She stole the show!  She did a trick or two with him but he was on the ground already and was just chilling.  He did lay his head in her lap and show how sweet he was.

That afternoon Rex called to say they had a couple calls already about Poe and one person was coming in to see him.  He forwarded me a voicemail of an old lady saying she had seen it and "that little girl did so good with what she said.  She needs to be on there more."  ha!

We are happy to report that Poe got adopted!!  About a week after the interview on TV he found his forever home.  He was a very sweet dog but there was no way we were getting another dog.  We were not in the market for another dog, and a huge dog at that.  The foster lady said he would do best in a home without other dogs.  We never even considered adopting him, but we were more than happy to help him find his forever home!

The kids spent the first week of August in camp at Sciworks - now named Kaleideum North.  The theme for the week was something to do with aerodynamics.  I don't know that either kid loved the theme but that is the week that worked best for them to go to SciCamp this summer.  They go every year and always have a blast so we wanted to fit it in the schedule.

Thursday night we headed to downtown WS because there was a big festival going on and Drew wanted to check it out and people watch.  Unfortunately there wasn't much going on that night so we went and got a milkshake.

Friday night we had a date night with the kids.  Will and I headed out to eat at his choice, Wendy's, and Drew and Lindy headed to Cookout.

Saturday of that week, Drew and the kids went to Charlotte.  Lindy hung out with Grandbob and Suzette all day and Drew took Will to a Minefaire convention.  Anna and Brian had gotten it for Will for his birthday.  They had a good time but I think there were a lot of people and they spent a good amount of time in lines.  Will was able to listen to some of the YouTube people he always watches and he was able to play against other people.  Lindy enjoyed meeting the neighbors' dogs and hanging with GrandBob and Suzette.  While they were gone I was at the church all day decorating for vacation bible school.
