Hayley

See this beautiful little lady?

It's my 6 year old niece, Hayley. One week ago today she had a life-changing event take place. A week ago today she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Yes, it's treatable. Yes, kids rarely have long-term complications anymore. Yes, the technology has come really far and now she can soon be on a pump. And yes, they are doing a ton of research and will hopefully find a cure in her lifetime.

But it stinks. She's 6. She has to deal with this the rest of her life. She's 6. She doesn't understand how to count carbs and why she has to take shots so many times a day. She's 6. She doesn't understand why she now has to tell someone every single time she eats anything at all. Did I mention she's 6?

If any of you are the praying kind, say a little prayer for Hayley and her family. My sister and brother-in-law are a bit overwhelmed trying to figure all this out right now.

Yes, once they get it all figured out it will become part of their day-to-day lives. But right now it just stinks!

We love you so much Hayley!!

My friend's 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes one week ago tomorrow. She lost her Dad on September 11th when she was only 2 years old.

I went with my friend last Friday, 9/11 to Columbia Presbyterian in NYC to begin the OVERWHELMING journey that is Type 1 diabetes. There were MANY tears last Friday for MANY reasons as you can imagine. Exactly the same things as your sweet niece is experiencing - not one morsel of food can enter her mouth without her mom knowing about it. And the shots, the shots, the shots...

I was inspired though by the fact that my friend said to her daughter that their lives changed overnight 8 years ago and they survived and life has thrown them another curve ball and their life has once again changed overnight, but they will survive again.

I wish your niece and her family the best of luck in their new normal...

PS Your little ones are adorable

We will be praying for Haylie and her parents! A dear friend of mine's 2 year old was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago with type 1 diabetes. It's definitely an adjustment but it does pure stink for this dear girl and all the rest of her family.

Take care - hope that your babes are well this week!
