Last week was a good week. I had an afternoon and a morning off, so I got to see the kids more than normal. That was nice because I had been working some long hours leading up to the walks.
Monday afternoon I took Lindy to her final session of testing with her hearing teacher. I’d say Lindy was a little bit distracted and I kept having to make sure she was really studying the pictures.
Her testing came back pretty good. She did the PLS and it’s scores were
PLS-4 Auditory Comprehension-102 Age equivalent-5.9
Expressive Comprehension-98 Age Equivalent-5.8
Total Test Score-100- Age Equivalent-6.0 (Shows 1 years progress in 1 years time)
She also took the Bracken test. She blew the school readiness test out of the water! It came back at 6 years, 9 months!! Go Lindy! She scored so high on the school readiness subtest that Mrs. Asbury had to start on a higher level on all the other subtests which didn't give her as many correct scores due to where she started the test. Her Total Test Score was 158 which was an age equivalent of 4 years and 7 months, which shows 5 months growth. This test counts the number of correct answers and because of where she started she was doing questions up in the 7-8 year old range. She didn’t get as many right so it makes her score look lower. It did show growth so I guess that is still a good thing. Overall I think she did great!
Will tried to give Drew and me a heart attack Tuesday morning. I was doing Lindy’s hair and Drew was in the bathroom and Will said he was heading down stairs. Seconds later we heard big booming and knew he had fallen down the steps. Scared me half to death. We flew down the steps and found him scared and crying. We checked to make sure all his appendages were okay and not broken. He said his mouth and back hurt. He must have slid down on his back a ways because he had carpet burn on it. He also hit the corner of his mouth and has carpet burn there. He rebounded way faster than I’ve ever seen him rebound from something. He has cried for an hour over a scraped knee but he pretty much popped up and told us he was fine and went and ate breakfast. My heart was not fine for another 20 minutes. It was pounding so fast for so long. I thought he might be nervous about going down the steps afterwards but he hasn’t been. He told us he was excited to get downstairs to read a book. That kid is 100% his father’s son. His love of books is crazy! In the meantime Lindy comes out of her room and yells down the steps, “What’s all the commotion?” It was a perfect question as there was a lot of commotion going on!
Tuesday afternoon I picked the kids up from school and took them to gymnastics. We left there and we tried a new frozen yogurt shop with Katie and Claire. It was a big hit with everyone! We headed home for a little while and then we went with Drew to visit two local UMAR houses. These two houses have adult women with developmental disabilities that live in them. They love to see the kids so we tagged along for the ride. We left there and we went to a really pretty street in Winston that has the most beautiful azaleas. We let the kids run around and we took some pictures –thank goodness for cell phones because my camera battery died after one picture. We left there and went to eat dinner.
I had Wednesday morning off as well and I was able to go with Lindy to the HI/VI field day they do with the school system. Drew and Will also went. Even though we held her out of school this year her hearing teacher invited her. We got there at 10am but things didn’t get started until about 10:30am. They did a little program where one hearing impaired high school student and one visually impaired student spoke. It is always neat to hear. Then the kids got to go play. Once again it was held at the Wake Forest football stadium which is just neat. We got to use the locker rooms for bathrooms so that was kind of neat too. It is just fun to be out on the field! It was also really fun that Lindy got to see most of her friends from last year. It was so cute because two boys saw her and started pointing and saying, “It’s Lindy!” She had fun seeing everyone and gave everyone big hugs when we left. We also visited the VI side of things and she got to meet the new vision teacher she will work with and she also met a couple kids who are in kindergarten right now. Her new vision teacher is so nice and I am looking forward to Lindy working with her. We had a fun morning. We left there and had lunch with Martha from our church to celebrate administrative professional appreciation day. She is awesome and does a lot for both me and Drew so we took her out to lunch.
Friday afternoon I picked the kids up from school and then used them for my work purposes! The ambassador family was supposed to visit some Lowe’s Food grocery stores last week and I used them as ambassador kids. Drew had taken them to a few stores the day before and so by this point they were old pros. They thanked the cashiers and got pictures with store managers. We went to two grocery stores and Kmart. Afterwards we stopped in downtown Thomasville and took pictures by the huge chair and the pretty tulips. We got to see a train go by and then we headed to dinner at Sir Pizza! Not as good as the Asheboro ones but it was still sweet Sir Pizza! We left Thomasville and headed home just long enough to change Will’s clothes and we headed to a tee ball game. Martha from church was there with Lindy and me and we got to see Will get not only his first, but also his second, hit from the coach pitching it. Not on the tee! It was so cool! He’s been so close and I’m so glad he finally connected with it! He was pretty excited after the game too. Lindy was a big pill at the game. She was all over Martha. She would not leave her alone. I finally made her sit in my lap to give Martha a small break. She squirmed and tried getting away. I warned her if she didn’t stop that I’d take her to the car and pop her. She sat still for approximately 30 secs and then said, “I think I’d like to be popped.”
Saturday I spent my day at the Greensboro March for Babies. The kids visited one more grocery store for me and then Will had another tee ball game at 1pm. He didn’t get any hits this time. After tee ball the kids headed up to the church for a big cookout and dancing for the UMAR houses and anyone else in the community with developmental disabilities that wanted to come. I think they had a great turnout and everyone had fun. They had a hamster ball that apparently my kids loved. Thankfully someone got pictures of it and sent them to me. I picked the kids up when I was done working, around 6pm.
Yesterday we had church and the little stinker Lindy struck again. For children’s time at church it was just Lindy, Will and another boy Dylan and Drew was leading it. He brought out all kinds of different objects that all had chocolate in them. Lindy kept yelling, ‘Chocolate’ every time she saw one. He was getting to the point that prayer could be like all those things. It can come in many different forms but it can all be prayer. So then he starts asking when the kids pray and Lindy would only yell, ‘Chocolate.” Drew was getting irritated at this point so he finally just started asking Will and Dylan questions and kind of ignored Lindy. He was just about to wrap up when Lindy said, “What about me?” Drew goes, “What about you?” Lindy said, “You didn’t ask me when I prayed.” So Drew asked her, “Lindy, when do you pray?” and the little turd yells, “Chocolate!” Everyone died laughing. It was like she totally set Drew up and he played right along. ha ha. What are we going to do with that girl?
After church we hurried home and we found Katie, Micah, Claire, and our friend Jennifer all waiting on us. We came in and changed our clothes and then Drew, Katie, and I headed out to Merlefest while Jennifer babysat all the kids here at our house. Merlefest is a huge outdoor concert of country and bluegrass type music. It’s a four day festival and we’ve always wanted to go. This year the Avett Brothers were headlining on Sunday afternoon. A bunch of us got tickets and we had all planned on bringing our kids because they got in free with our tickets. Sat. night we checked the forecast and it was supposed to be cold, wet, and windy on Sunday. Katie and I decided it would be miserable to take the kids so I found a last minute babysitter and she watched the kids for us so the adults could go sit in the rain. And sit in the rain we did! We got there around 2pm and we heard Tift Merritt, Pokey LeFarge, and finally the Avett Brothers. We did have a great time, despite the rain. The only thing that saved us was the ponchos. We all stayed fairly dry with our ponchos on. We headed back and stopped for dinner at the Waffle House and finally got back home. The kids finally got in bed at 9pm and we followed soon after.
It was a very busy and fun week and weekend we had!
